The First amendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Why was that first and why the protection of religion first of all?
Simple..
we all gotta die..yeah even YOU. and when that happens we must be judged by God. The results of that judgement last for all time. So important was that seen to be that NO one could be allowed to force you to worship in any way that you saw as wrong because it was YOUR soul at stake. That, despite what you will see in PC social studies books, I wont call them history books, That, is what most of the founders believed.
