The USA is a republic.
We set up a government under a document called the Constitution that both creates a National Government and limits its power.
We also have 50 state governments and thousands of city and town governments.
WHY?
The people who set up our government KNEW from history that power is a drug and government is the supplier. Yet history has shown that people cannot live in a group without some rules IE: Government.
So the task is two fold:
A; Create a system of government..That is the easy part.
B; Place needed limits on its power
What? You dont think that part 'A" is easy?
Put troops, with fire at will, orders on every block and disarm the people. There will be NO crime But there will be no freedom.
Or No rules! Turn the place into Woodstock Do your Thing without the MAN and crime would run wild..what IF my thing is enslaving YOU? Still cool dude?

So we established a CONSTITUTIONAL Republic where the people pick the pols but what the pols may do is RESTRICTED by the Constitution and the LAWS.
In a democracy the people are able to vote for any thing they want... no constitutional restrictions. Hey cool righe dude?? Nope. Wrong..again..
Think about this. The side YOU like loses the election and the winner's votes to send the losers to a concentration camp. Hey power to the PEOPLE right comrade!!!!
It is to protect against this, and protect the freedom of all the citizens that we have a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.
